This article was inspired by an interview with Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar at Deakin University's Applied Artificial Intelligence Institute, exploring Absolute Intelligence vs. Artificial Intelligence and how we as humans can thrive in the age of AI. It is the third and final installment in the three-part series, Being Human in the Age of AI, exploring consciousness, connection, and the calm mind in an era of increasingly intelligent machines.
If someone asked what skills will matter most in the age of artificial intelligence, many people would answer:
Programming. Critical thinking. Adaptability. Technical expertise.
These are valuable skills. But Gurudev believes there is another quality that will become increasingly important as AI becomes more capable.
What kind of mind will best guide humanity as AI becomes more capable?
His answer is surprisingly simple.
A calm mind.
Have you ever noticed that the harder you search for your keys or glasses, the more difficult they become to find? Often, it isn't because they're hidden. It's because stress changes the way we perceive what's right in front of us.
When we experience stress, our bodies activate the fight-or-flight response. Attention narrows, peripheral awareness decreases, and our brains prioritize immediate survival over thoughtful observation. This "tunnel vision" is remarkably useful if you're escaping a dangerous predator. It is far less helpful when navigating the complexities of modern life, where discernment often matters more than speed.
A calm mind sees the bigger picture. It notices opportunities that stress overlooks, recognizes possibilities before reacting, and responds with greater clarity and discernment. Instead of becoming trapped by immediate circumstances, it has the space to perceive what is actually happening.
This is one of the reasons practices like breathwork and meditation are so valuable. As the nervous system settles, mental noise begins to quiet. Clarity, creativity, intuition, compassion, and sound judgment can naturally emerge, not because they are created, but because they are no longer obscured by stress.
A stressed mind reacts. A calm, centered mind perceives more accurately. And from that perception, human potential begins to unfold.

Many young people today find themselves caught between two extremes. Some struggle with anxiety and depression. Others respond to life's pressures with frustration and aggression. Both are signs of a nervous system under strain.
Gurudev suggests there is another way, not by suppressing emotions or avoiding challenges, but by cultivating inner stability. A calm mind is neither passive nor indifferent. It is alert, resilient, and able to respond thoughtfully rather than react impulsively.
Resilience means being balanced in all situations, both positive and difficult. It means moving through our emotions without getting stuck. When we are less affected by stress, we become better listeners, wiser decision-makers, and more compassionate leaders.
These aren't just leadership skills. They're life skills.
Perhaps most importantly, a calm mind creates the conditions for intuition to arise. While stress narrows our awareness and keeps us focused on immediate problems, stillness allows us to perceive possibilities we might otherwise miss. It is often in moments of calm, not urgency, that our clearest insights emerge.
For generations, education has focused primarily on helping students acquire knowledge and develop technical skills. In the age of artificial intelligence, those abilities remain important. But as information becomes increasingly accessible, education has an even greater responsibility: developing complete human beings.
Knowledge matters. So do emotional intelligence, resilience, communication, compassion, integrity, and character. These qualities cannot simply be downloaded or generated by artificial intelligence. They must be realized as lived experiences.
They are cultivated through experience, reflection, service, meaningful relationships, and spiritual practices that develop self-awareness. These are the qualities that enable us to work well with others, navigate uncertainty with confidence, and use technology wisely.
Perhaps the greatest measure of education is not how much information a person can recall, but who they become. A calm, centered mind creates the foundation for lifelong learning, wise leadership, and the ability to contribute positively to the world, qualities that will remain distinctly human, no matter how intelligent technology becomes.

Artificial intelligence is a powerful tool. Like any tool, its impact depends largely on the person using it.
AI can help us solve complex problems, communicate more effectively, spark creativity, and accelerate discovery. But it can also amplify fear, anger, prejudice, misinformation, and division. The technology itself doesn't choose the outcome. Human consciousness does.
Gurudev reminds us that the quality of our mind shapes the quality of our actions. When we are calm, clear, and free from overwhelming stress, we are more likely to use technology with wisdom, compassion, and discernment. When we are reactive, fearful, or consumed by anger, those same technologies can magnify those emotional states and extend their impact far beyond ourselves.
As artificial intelligence becomes more capable, our inner development becomes increasingly important. The question is no longer only, "What can AI do?" It is also, "Who are we becoming as we use it?"
The future of artificial intelligence will undoubtedly be shaped by technological advances. But the future of humanity will always be shaped by the consciousness of the people.

Toward the close of the interview at Deakin University's Applied Artificial Intelligence Institute, Gurudev summarized a future worth building:
"A violence-free society, a disease-free body, a confusion-free mind, an inhibition-free intellect, a trauma-free memory, and a sorrow-free soul."
This vision may sound idealistic, but Gurudev believes it is the birthright of every human being. More importantly, it is practical. If humanity is to thrive alongside increasingly powerful technologies, we must place equal emphasis on developing the human qualities that technology can never replace.
Imagine communities built on emotional resilience instead of chronic stress. Imagine leaders guided by wisdom as well as intellect. Imagine education that values character as much as knowledge. Imagine technology serving humanity rather than distracting or dividing it.
None of these possibilities depend on technology alone. They depend on the quality of the people designing it, teaching it, governing it, and using it. A calmer society begins with calmer individuals.
The future will not be shaped by artificial intelligence alone. It will be shaped by the quality of the minds and hearts guiding it.
Artificial intelligence will undoubtedly continue reshaping our world. But the future won't be determined solely by faster algorithms or more powerful machines. It will be shaped by the clarity, wisdom, compassion, and consciousness of the people who use them.
Perhaps the greatest opportunity presented by AI isn't technological at all.
Perhaps it is that it challenges us to ask what it truly means to be human.
As artificial intelligence continues to evolve, our uniquely human capacities become increasingly valuable. Wisdom. Discernment. Presence. Compassion. Creativity. Intuition. These are not relics of the past; they are the qualities that will guide the future.
The future of humanity will ultimately be determined not only by the intelligence we build, but by the consciousness we bring to it.
That remains both our greatest opportunity and our greatest responsibility.

A calm mind isn't something we're simply born with or without. Like physical fitness, it is something we cultivate through consistent practice.
Breathwork and meditation offer practical ways to quiet the nervous system, reduce chronic stress, and develop the inner stability Gurudev describes. Rather than adding something new, these practices help remove the mental noise that obscures our natural clarity, resilience, and intuition.
One practical way to cultivate this inner stability is through SKY Breath Meditation. By combining evidence-based breathing techniques with meditation, SKY helps calm the mind, restore emotional balance, and support greater clarity, resilience, and well-being.
As artificial intelligence continues to evolve, perhaps our greatest task isn't keeping pace with technology. It's remembering how to cultivate the qualities that make us most deeply human.
Discover how SKY Breath Meditation can help you cultivate a calmer mind and navigate the age of AI with greater wisdom, resilience, and compassion.
A calm mind doesn't create Absolute Intelligence. It allows us to experience it.
